Safer Streets Graffiti Workshop — September 2023

The Safer Streets Graffiti Project used community-led art as a tool to improve the appearance and safety of the Spacemakers area within Wilmott Park. Delivered in collaboration with Hartcliffe Club for Young People, the project placed creativity and ownership directly in the hands of local young people.

Participants worked with guidance and support to design and create graffiti artwork that reflected local identity and pride. By transforming blank or neglected surfaces, the project helped reduce unwanted tagging while creating a more welcoming and cared-for environment.

The project demonstrated how positive creative activity can contribute to safer public spaces, build confidence among young people, and challenge negative perceptions of graffiti by showing its potential as a constructive and community-driven art form.

The Spacemakers team were granted funding by Safer Streets in 2023, to launch a Graffiti Project in partnership with Hartcliffe Club for Young People (HCYP). Thanks to Simon from HCYP, we connected with a talented graffiti artist named Duncan who has worked wonders with young people on similar projects. We ran three exciting workshops where we’ll delved into the wonders of space, learn about the project, and even try our hand at spray painting! 🎨✨ After the successful workshops, we added some vibrant graffiti to the Shelter, also known as the Lozenge, under Duncan’s guidance and with Simon’s assistance. Get ready for an explosion of creativity below.

Session one (2nd September 2023) at Spacemakers was a stellar success! We gathered together, armed with pens and paper, to let our imaginations soar into the depths of outer space. From meeting the talented adults behind the project to collaborating on mind-blowing ideas, it was an unforgettable experience. Check out the pictures to catch a glimpse of our out-of-this-world designs on the shelter! #Spacemakers #SessionOneCompleted #ImaginationUnleashed

Session two (9th September 2023) at the Youth Centre was out of this world! 🌌🎨 We got creative with spray painting on the approved surfaces, adding our own touch to the graffiti art. Huge thanks to Duncan for teaching us the technique! Take a look at the stunning artwork we made! #YouthCentreAdventures #SprayPaintingFun #ArtisticExpressions

Session Three: Mission Accomplished! 🎉✅ We took matters into our own hands and covered the shelter in black Hammerite paint, erasing the old graffiti and paving the way for new artistic expressions. The possibilities are endless now, and we can’t wait to see what the young minds will bring to this space! 🎨🌟 #MissionAccomplished #NewBeginnings #ArtisticExpressions

7th October – a day to remember! 🎉✨ After three weeks of learning and honing their spray painting skills, 15 young individuals from Hartcliffe and Withywood have come together to create a breathtaking installation. 🎨🚀 Witness the fusion of their creativity as they transform a blank canvas into a vivid depiction of outer space. Prepare to be amazed by their talent and dedication!
